Renovation of Two Rural Schools

The foundation’s focus in 2022 was on the renovation of two under-resourced elementary schools — Escuela Barrio La Estación de Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa and Escuela por Cooperativa Colonia Cañaveral Párvulos y Primaria in Esquintla. The initial focus was on the schools’ sanitary facilities, which were in terrible condition (broken pipes and pumps, no sinks; at La Estación kids were leaving school to use the bathroom at home). We installed new plumbing, pumps and fixtures and created new handwashing stations.

Once we started work, it became clear much more was needed to create safe, healthy learning environments. At Colonia Cañaverales  foundation funds went to upgrading the electrical and lighting systems, and a fresh coat of paint.

The School at La Estación needed more of an overhaul. In consultation with the municipality, teachers and parents, we funded the construction of two new classrooms as well as a new perimeter wall, vastly improving security. We repaired walls and the roof, upgraded the lighting and ventilation, added a system of pathways, landscaped the play yard, and installed new play equipment.

We’re proud to have helped create schools that their communities can be proud of, benefiting 855 students.
