Medical Attention for Covid-19 Patients
In June 2020, with Guatemalan hospitals facing the possibility of being overwhelmed by Covid-19 patients, we helped fund a Temporary Nursing Unit, in Zone 21 of Guatemala City. In just four months a 1,300-square meter building was constructed to serve as an observation and nursing facility for people with Covid-19 symptoms or who were directly exposed to the virus. The construction was on-budget and on time. The building has 50 patient bays, and the center started serving patients on December 3, 2020, with each month busier than before. The project was a collaboration between local business, the municipality and foundations.
“The center allows us to provide a safe place to citizens who have no way to care for family members with mild symptoms or in quarantine. In addition, we are reducing infections and mortality statistics.”
-Guatemala City Mayor, Ricardo Quiñonez
Once the pandemic is over, the building will serve the community as a multiple use wellness center. It is the flagship of a plan spearheaded by the the mayor to develop health centers in cardinal points of Guatemala City. The clinic will provide general medical care in area such as:
Repiratory issues
Gastro-intestinal ailments
Viruses and fever
Nutrition
Disaster relief
